The New TCG On the Block

Post by buckthefuffalo on Fri Oct 05, 2012 6:42 pm

So, a new TCG came out about a month ago called Kaijudo, which I've been keeping up with recently. It's basically a reboot of Duel Masters, an older TCG that stopped being released in America in 2006 due to low sales. It's made by Wizards of the Coast, so the game itself is pretty neat.

Cards look like this:

The game, much like Magic the Gathering, revolves around placing cards into a mana zone ("charging" mana) each turn to use as fuel for summoning creatures and spells. However, Kaijudo has what is in my opinion a neat mechanic. Five cards from your deck are placed in a row face down between the mana and battle zones. These are your "shields". The ultimate goal and win condition of the game is to remove all of your opponent's shields, and then declare a direct attack from one of your creatures on the opponent. When a shield is removed, it goes into its respective player's hand as a normal card, giving a sense of balance to the game, since you're giving your opponent a resource whenever you break one of their shields.

Now I'll explain what each of the areas on the cards mean:

Card Level: How much mana you will need to turn sideways ("tap") in order to summon the creature or activate the spell. This is a one-time cost. After you tap a mana, you can't use it again until next turn. You need to have at least one card in your mana zone that is the same color as the card you are summoning/casting in order to play it. The five colors, or "civilizations", are Fire, Water, Dark, Light, and Nature, each with their own perks and weaknesses. Any card can become a mana by placing it into your mana zone at the start of your turn. However, you may only place one card in your mana zone per turn unless a card's effect lets you do otherwise.

Creature Type: The race of the creature. Certain effects will only work with certain creature types.

Card Abilities: The effect of a card.

Power: The strength a creature has in battle. Like most card games, you can attack your opponent's creatures to start a battle. The creature with the highest power wins, and the loser is sent to a discard pile. In this game, you can either use a creature to attack an opponent's tapped creature, where power matters, or break one of their shields.

Rarity: Self-explanatory. The higher the rarity, the harder a card is to pull from boosters. One star is common, two is uncommon, three is rare, four is very rare, and five is super rare.

So those are the basics of it. I feel like the art and names of cards/abilities are more geared towards kids than Duel Masters was, but it's still a fun game and I'd like to get back into it. Unfortunately, with all the card games out now, Kaijudo may have a tough time with profit, so I'm still weary of it.

Discuss.

TCGs have this tendency to be really expensive to keep up with, so in all honesty, I will never play this in real life. But if it's free online, I'll give it a whirl.

Luckily for now it's fairly cheap. Duel Masters was too. However, there are some fairly expensive cards. Packs outside of boxes have insane pull rates though. I've gotten a super and 3 very rares in 5 packs. The boxes have 24 packs and you usually get 2-3 supers per box, with maybe 4-6 very rares. Other people have experienced the same thing.

That said, prices are still somewhat inflated right now since the base set is a whopping 180 cards, making everything harder to obtain and more costly. The next set is only going to be 60, so it should be better then.

There is online play in the works, but unfortunately it'll require code cards from the boosters to play. Or, at least, to obtain new cards.

By the way, wouldn't this go in separate games?

I enjoyed Duel Masters.
Unfortunately, they're remaking it and fucking it.
Is nothing held sacred these days?
Next thing you know, they're going to make another Yu-Gi-Oh! series.

Oh wait.....

How are they fucking it though? It's the same game. Most of the art bar a few cards isn't even new. Only thing I don't like about it is some of the kiddy names for things, but it barely bothers me.

It's still huge in Japan, and there are still a lot of old DM players who have wanted a revival since its death. I also feel like they saw a new opportunity in a slightly younger target audience, so there ya go.

Blech. It's like "Battle B-Daman". That shit was a Beyblade revival. And then Bakugan came along and did it successfully. Even I got into Bakugan for a long time.

Of course, they took that too far too.

Now they have these little metal things they call Beyblades, but I enjoy dismantling them with my old quality Beyblades every single time I see a little kid playing with one.

I see what you're saying, but in both of those cases, it wasn't the same game when "revived", and I don't believe it was by the same company either (although I could be wrong on that). It certainly wasn't the case for Bakugan since Beyblade and Bakugan have absolutely nothing in common outside of spinning something.

And yeah, I think the old ones were actually made of a sturdy metal, whereas now they're safer. An old Beyblade could mess a kid's hand up.

It's just the opposite. They could mess a hand up. They took apart one of my fingernails. However, they used to be good plastic. NOW, they're this metal shit that is really.... I can fuck them up with the old Beyblades, is what I'm saying. Additionally, the concept of a beast possessing your small plastic item and participating in tournaments to prevent the villain from using theirs to control the world is, while being a common theme, a little too close for me to overlook. I do understand your point of view. All I'm saying is that it's my fucking childhood, and they have no right to mess it up. Kind of like Power Rangers. Mighty Morphin' through Ninja Storm/Dino Thunder was alright. But once we got past that, the plotline became the same and it really got old.

hey
hey korasi
IT'S NOT ONLY YOUR CHILDHOOD
also, 90% of what you're saying is nostalgia based.
Beyblades were the things that you put in that circle arena thing and you pulled the string out and they spun and shit right?

Yes, they are.

And that statement was me being facetious. Thanks for playing the home game. <3

But what I said is essentially what I mean. They're just money-hungry. Make some new fun anime-based games, why don't you. Shit...

But WotC doesn't make video games. Or anime.

What about a first-person Bleach video game. Or like..... I dunno, maybe a popularly requested remake? SOMETHING. OTHER. THAN. A. COMPLETE. REBOOT.
And don't tell me that this ^ is contradicting, because a remake is different from a reboot.

They don't have any control over video games, and the entire point of Kaijudo is that it was a popularly requested remake of DM. There are a few minor changes, and there are quite a bit of new monsters and whatnot. It's still a "reboot", since the old DM died, but maybe our definition of reboot is different. The show is actually entirely different to the point where cards aren't even a thing, but it, like most shows of that nature, is pretty much advertising catered to kids, so I don't care for it.

I just think that slapping a different tag onto the same game is lame. Especially when they had already marketed for the previous name.
